And the Lord will make you the head and not the tail; you shall be above only, and not be beneath, if you heed the commandments of the Lord your God, which I command you today, and are careful to observe them.
The tail follows the head. Not only is this a blessing, but it is also a calling for all of us who follow God in Spirit and Truth.
Why did God elevate Israel? Was it for their own merit? Was it because they were smarter than the surrounding nations? Is prosperity a by-product of following God? True, obedience to God and His Commands and Calling on the Name of His Son Yeshua comes with a blessing of salvation and sanctification, but He has also promised us hard times and persecution: "Indeed, all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will be persecuted" (2 Timothy 3:12 ). This is the complexity of God's truth that His goodness also includes justice, and His blessing also includes His glory sometimes through our suffering. The point is that all is ultimately an illustration for His glory. He is our head and we follow Him so that others can follow us and thereby follow God. Like the age old kids game follow the leader, this scripture is a call to keep His Word and Live according to it, so that, like Paul, we can say with confidence follow me as I follow Christ. (1 Corinthians 11:1)
